ABUJA — September 10, 2026 — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stressed the importance of agricultural mechanisation in transforming the nation’s agricultural sector, saying it is critical to empowering women, attracting young people into farming and strengthening Nigeria’s food security. Oluremi Tinubu said modern farming methods and access to mechanised equipment would help reduce the physical burden associated with agriculture while improving productivity and making farming more attractive to the younger generation. BREAKING: ‘I Never Said Military Should Reject Salary Increase’ — Peter ObiDate: August 11, 2026

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denied reports claiming that he asked members of the Nigerian military to reject the salary increase recently approved by the Federal Government.
Obi described the report as false and urged Nigerians to disregard the claim.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, Obi said the report falsely attributed to him a position that he never expressed, particularly the suggestion that Nigerian soldiers should refuse salary increases until after the 2027 general election.
“I Never Said Military Should Reject Salary Increase,” Obi stated, describing the allegation as entirely untrue.
The former governor reaffirmed his respect for members of the security forces, particularly soldiers serving under difficult and dangerous conditions. He said he has consistently advocated improved welfare, adequate resources, safety and protection for military personnel.
Obi also said that, if elected president in 2027, the welfare, resources, safety and dignity of Nigerian soldiers would be among his priorities.
The controversy comes days after President Bola Tinubu approved a 30 to 80 per cent salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with the new pay structure expected to take effect from September 1, 2026.
Independent fact-checking reports have also found no credible evidence that Obi made the alleged statement calling on soldiers to reject the salary increase until after the 2027 election.
Obi has therefore urged members of the public to disregard what he described as a misleading report and focus on his stated position concerning the welfare and security of Nigeria’s armed forces.

Niger Police Arrest 147 Suspects, Recover Weapons and Cannabis in Statewide Raids

August 14, 2026 The Niger State Police Command has arrested 147 suspects in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts, alleged thuggery and other criminal activities across the state. According to the command, 139 suspects were arrested during raids in Suleja and surrounding areas following an alleged violent rally. Among those arrested, 64 suspects were reportedly found in possession of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons and four live cartridges. The 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons. In a separate operation in Minna, police operatives arrested eight suspected thugs during raids on criminal hideouts in the Talakawa area of Tunga.
