DEFENCE MINISTER HAILS TINUBU OVER MILITARY SALARY INCREASE

Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a 30 to 80 percent salary increase for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, describing the move as a landmark step toward improving troop welfare and strengthening national security.
The revised salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Under the new pay package, junior-ranked personnel will receive the highest increase, with some earning up to 80 percent more than their current salaries.
According to the Defence Minister, the salary review reflects President Tinubu's unwavering commitment to enhancing the welfare and morale of military personnel who continue to defend the nation against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and other security threats.
Gen. Musa noted that improved welfare remains a critical component of building a highly motivated and effective military, adding that the Federal Government is committed to ensuring members of the armed forces are adequately rewarded for their sacrifice and dedication to national service.
He urged officers and soldiers to reciprocate the government's gesture by demonstrating greater professionalism, discipline, loyalty, and commitment to protecting Nigeria's territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of citizens.
The Defence Minister further reaffirmed the Federal Government's resolve to continue strengthening the Armed Forces through enhanced welfare packages, modern military equipment, improved training, and increased operational capacity to effectively address the country's evolving security challenges.
The salary increase is widely regarded as one of the most significant welfare reforms for the Nigerian military in recent years and is expected to boost morale and operational effectiveness across the armed forces.
