EXCLUSIVE: Tinubu Set to Address World Leaders at UN General Assembly on September 23

Abuja, Nigeria — August 19, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to address world leaders at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
According to the provisional speaking schedule, President Tinubu is expected to be the 10th speaker during the morning session of the high-level General Debate. His address is scheduled for around 11:30 a.m. to noon New York time, equivalent to approximately 4:30 p.m. Nigerian time.
The appearance will place Nigeria among more than 190 participating countries, with over 150 heads of state and government expected to attend the global gathering.
Tinubu is expected to use the international platform to highlight the progress of his administration’s economic reforms and outline Nigeria’s priorities on development, security and international cooperation.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, had earlier confirmed that the President would personally attend the 81st UN General Assembly and showcase his administration’s reform achievements. Reports also indicate that Nigeria plans to push a new border-policing initiative.
The 81st UN General Assembly will be held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The United Nations has confirmed that the General Debate will run from September 22 to September 26, with an additional sitting on September 28.
Tinubu’s planned appearance will also mark his return to the UN General Assembly after Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented him at the previous two sessions.

Niger Police Arrest 147 Suspects, Recover Weapons and Cannabis in Statewide Raids

August 14, 2026 The Niger State Police Command has arrested 147 suspects in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts, alleged thuggery and other criminal activities across the state. According to the command, 139 suspects were arrested during raids in Suleja and surrounding areas following an alleged violent rally. Among those arrested, 64 suspects were reportedly found in possession of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons and four live cartridges. The 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons. In a separate operation in Minna, police operatives arrested eight suspected thugs during raids on criminal hideouts in the Talakawa area of Tunga.
