🚨 EXCLUSIVENANS Urges Tinubu to Release Over ₦200 Billion in Withheld Osun LG Funds

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the continued withholding of statutory allocations meant for the 30 local government areas of Osun State.
In an open letter to the President, NANS said available public records indicated that more than ₦200 billion in local government allocations had accumulated as withheld funds by the middle of 2026, with further monthly accruals expected.
The students’ body made the appeal shortly after the conclusion of the August 15, 2026 Osun governorship election, which saw Governor Ademola Adeleke re-elected.
NANS argued that the election was an opportunity for political differences to give way to governance and development, urging the Federal Government to resolve any outstanding legal or administrative issues surrounding the funds.
According to the association, the financial situation directly affects students and residents because local governments are closest to communities hosting tertiary institutions.
NANS said the availability of funds at the grassroots could support roads, sanitation, healthcare, water supply, security, youth development and other essential services.
The association therefore called on President Tinubu to direct relevant federal institutions to ensure that the funds are released to the constitutionally recognised local governments through a lawful, transparent and accountable process.
NANS also stressed that any release of the funds should translate into visible development, particularly in communities hosting tertiary institutions.
“Let politics give way to governance. Let the funds reach the people,” the students’ body said.
Earlier reports based on FAAC data put the withheld allocations at about ₦201.962 billion between March 2025 and May 2026.

Niger Police Arrest 147 Suspects, Recover Weapons and Cannabis in Statewide Raids

August 14, 2026 The Niger State Police Command has arrested 147 suspects in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts, alleged thuggery and other criminal activities across the state. According to the command, 139 suspects were arrested during raids in Suleja and surrounding areas following an alleged violent rally. Among those arrested, 64 suspects were reportedly found in possession of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons and four live cartridges. The 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons. In a separate operation in Minna, police operatives arrested eight suspected thugs during raids on criminal hideouts in the Talakawa area of Tunga.
