ABUJA — September 10, 2026 — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stressed the importance of agricultural mechanisation in transforming the nation’s agricultural sector, saying it is critical to empowering women, attracting young people into farming and strengthening Nigeria’s food security. Obasanjo: Africa Still Has No True Democracy

ABUJA — August 12, 2026
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has said Africa has no true democracy, arguing that the Western liberal democratic system imposed on the continent has not been sufficiently adapted to African realities.
Obasanjo said colonial powers introduced Western-style democracy to Africa without adequately considering the continent’s history, cultures, traditional institutions and unique political circumstances.
The former president argued that democracy in Africa should not be defined solely by elections, but should also promote accountability, good governance, justice and the welfare of citizens.
He called for African countries to develop governance systems that reflect their own realities while embracing democratic principles that strengthen institutions and ensure effective leadership.
Obasanjo’s comments have renewed debate over the suitability of the Western democratic model for Africa and the need for the continent to develop approaches to governance that are more responsive to its historical and socio-cultural circumstances.
