Police Warn Nigerians Against Paying for Bail at Police Stations

The Nigeria Police Force has advised members of the public against paying money for bail at police stations, stressing that the law does not permit anyone to demand payment before granting bail.
CSP Anitie Okokon, in a statement aimed at educating Nigerians about their rights, said anyone who is asked to pay money for bail at a police station should leave the station and report the matter to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
“The law doesn't allow anybody to pay for bail at any police station. If you go to any police station and you're asked to pay for bail, just quietly walk outside and call the IGP,” Okokon said.
Members of the public were also advised to contact the Police Gateway Sched on +2348000009111 for a quick response to complaints involving alleged demands for payment for bail at police stations.
The police urged Nigerians to know and understand their rights while cooperating with law enforcement agencies to promote peace, justice and harmony within their communities.
Citizens are encouraged to report any alleged misconduct through the appropriate channels rather than engaging in confrontation with police officers.

Niger Police Arrest 147 Suspects, Recover Weapons and Cannabis in Statewide Raids

August 14, 2026 The Niger State Police Command has arrested 147 suspects in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts, alleged thuggery and other criminal activities across the state. According to the command, 139 suspects were arrested during raids in Suleja and surrounding areas following an alleged violent rally. Among those arrested, 64 suspects were reportedly found in possession of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons and four live cartridges. The 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons. In a separate operation in Minna, police operatives arrested eight suspected thugs during raids on criminal hideouts in the Talakawa area of Tunga.
