From Spotlight African Reporters 26th September 2026 Former Super Eagles midfielder Sani Kaita has described Victor Osimhen’s absence from Nigeria’s squad as a major setback ahead of the Super Eagles’ international friendly against Russia in October. Kaita, a former Nigeria international, said Osimhen’s presence would have provided the national team with additional attacking strength and experience as the Super Eagles prepare for the encounter. Osimhen has established himself as one of Nigeria’s key attacking players, and his absence means the team could have to rely on other forwards to lead the line against the Russians. The former midfielder noted that games against strong opposition such as Russia provide important opportunities for the Super Eagles to assess their squad and build toward future international assignments. The Federal Government has pledged to intensify investments in Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure as part of efforts to tackle persistent blackouts and improve power supply across the country.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the assurance in Lagos while commissioning major transmission projects at the Alausa and Lekki transmission substations.
The Alausa project includes a new 100MVA, 132/33kV transformer, which increases the substation’s capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA. Officials say the upgrade is expected to provide more stable electricity to about 70,000 residents in Alausa and surrounding areas.
At the Lekki transmission substation, additional transformers have also significantly increased electricity transformation capacity to meet growing residential, commercial and industrial demand.
Tegbe said the Federal Government would continue investing in critical transmission infrastructure across Lagos, Abuja, the Kaduna-Kano corridor, Enugu, Port Harcourt and other parts of Nigeria.
The minister also disclosed that the government is targeting the ability to wheel 6,000 megawatts of electricity by December 2026, while 20 transmission projects are expected to be commissioned before the end of the year.
The government has called on electricity distribution companies to complement federal investments by upgrading their networks and ensuring that additional electricity reaches consumers.
The Federal Ministry of Power has similarly reaffirmed its commitment to improving electricity reliability through fresh investments aimed at stabilising the national grid.
