ABUJA — September 10, 2026 — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stressed the importance of agricultural mechanisation in transforming the nation’s agricultural sector, saying it is critical to empowering women, attracting young people into farming and strengthening Nigeria’s food security. Oluremi Tinubu said modern farming methods and access to mechanised equipment would help reduce the physical burden associated with agriculture while improving productivity and making farming more attractive to the younger generation. WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — United States President Donald Trump has ruled out any immediate talks with Iran, saying no negotiations are currently taking place and none are scheduled, as tensions over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz continue to escalate.
Trump also insisted that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and operational, directly contradicting Iran’s position that the waterway is still closed to shipping until Washington meets conditions set by Tehran.
The conflicting positions have deepened uncertainty surrounding efforts to restore commercial shipping through the strait, a critical global energy route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas normally passes.

Iranian officials say the waterway will remain closed until the United States lifts its blockade of Iranian ports, removes oil sanctions, releases frozen Iranian assets and ends military threats and operations against Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iran and Oman have continued discussions over a possible arrangement to manage shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The talks have raised hopes of reopening the waterway, but Washington has expressed opposition to parts of the proposed arrangement.

Maritime traffic has already fallen sharply. Shipping data cited by the Associated Press showed confirmed crossings dropped to 95 in the previous week, while only three vessels passed through the waterway on Sunday.
The standoff is also putting pressure on global energy markets, with oil prices rising amid fears that prolonged disruption around the Strait could further threaten international supplies.
With Washington ruling out scheduled negotiations and Tehran maintaining its conditions for reopening the waterway, diplomatic efforts to ease the crisis remain uncertain.

Niger Police Arrest 147 Suspects, Recover Weapons and Cannabis in Statewide Raids

August 14, 2026 The Niger State Police Command has arrested 147 suspects in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts, alleged thuggery and other criminal activities across the state. According to the command, 139 suspects were arrested during raids in Suleja and surrounding areas following an alleged violent rally. Among those arrested, 64 suspects were reportedly found in possession of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons and four live cartridges. The 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons. In a separate operation in Minna, police operatives arrested eight suspected thugs during raids on criminal hideouts in the Talakawa area of Tunga.
