ABUJA — September 10, 2026 — Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has stressed the importance of agricultural mechanisation in transforming the nation’s agricultural sector, saying it is critical to empowering women, attracting young people into farming and strengthening Nigeria’s food security. Oluremi Tinubu said modern farming methods and access to mechanised equipment would help reduce the physical burden associated with agriculture while improving productivity and making farming more attractive to the younger generation. According to her, women play a significant role in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain and should be supported with the tools, technology, financing and training required to expand their contributions to food production and economic development. Tinubu Takes South Africa’s Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians to AU, Demands Urgent Action

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has raised Nigeria’s concerns over recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa before the African Union (AU), calling for urgent collective action to address the situation.
The President urged African leaders to strengthen efforts to protect African nationals living and conducting legitimate businesses across the continent, stressing the need for African solidarity and mutual respect among member states.
Tinubu also called for the issue of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa to be placed on the agenda of the African Union Summit scheduled for January 2027, where leaders can deliberate on concrete measures to prevent further attacks and safeguard the rights and welfare of African citizens.
The development comes amid renewed concerns over the treatment of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, with calls growing for stronger diplomatic and continental intervention.
Meanwhile, the Presidency has also explained that President Tinubu’s ongoing three-week vacation is intended to give him an opportunity to rest and “refuel” ahead of the demanding political season leading into 2027.
The Presidency said the break is part of the President’s schedule and is designed to enable him to recharge before returning to his official responsibilities and the political activities expected ahead of the 2027 elections.
The President’s decision to take the xenophobia issue before the AU underscores Nigeria’s continued interest in protecting its citizens abroad while promoting stronger cooperation and peaceful relations among African countries.

Niger Police Arrest 147 Suspects, Recover Weapons and Cannabis in Statewide Raids

August 14, 2026 The Niger State Police Command has arrested 147 suspects in separate operations targeting criminal hideouts, alleged thuggery and other criminal activities across the state. According to the command, 139 suspects were arrested during raids in Suleja and surrounding areas following an alleged violent rally. Among those arrested, 64 suspects were reportedly found in possession of suspected cannabis, dangerous weapons and four live cartridges. The 64 suspects were subsequently arraigned and remanded in a correctional centre over alleged offences including criminal conspiracy, armed robbery and possession of dangerous weapons. In a separate operation in Minna, police operatives arrested eight suspected thugs during raids on criminal hideouts in the Talakawa area of Tunga.
