White House Attacks CNN Reporter Over Question on Trump Aide

Date: August 18, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House has come under criticism after launching a personal attack on CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes following a question she asked President Donald Trump about his relationship with executive assistant Natalie Harp.
The confrontation occurred on Monday, August 17, during an Oval Office event. Holmes asked Trump to respond to comments from Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff concerning his relationship with Harp.
Trump dismissed the question and criticized Ossoff before turning his attention to Holmes. He later described the CNN reporter as “fake news” and told her to be quiet while she attempted to ask another question concerning North Korea.
The White House’s Rapid Response account subsequently escalated the dispute by posting a video of the exchange on social media and directing personal criticism at Holmes. The post even referred to her children, prompting further criticism from journalists and press advocates.
CNN defended Holmes, saying she was carrying out her responsibility as a journalist and strongly rejecting the personal attacks against her. The network said it stood firmly behind its correspondent.
The incident has renewed concerns over the increasingly tense relationship between the Trump administration and members of the White House press corps, particularly when journalists ask challenging questions.
Spotlight African Reporters will continue to monitor developments.
